Lumbers
"Life in the shadow of the wave"

SR-002, LP ed. 30, Spring 2012

Lumbers is a hard man to peg. You might know him as the guitarist on Boduf Songs' darkest record or from the death and doom of Beekeeper. Then again, you might know him as someone who's shared a stage with the empyrean Josephine Foster. Hinting at a move toward the quiet life, Lumbers' new record would sit well on a shelf next to Gavin Bryars, Max Richter, and Stars of the Lid. The orchestral landscape of "Life in the Shadow of the Wave" has been tread upon in ways that leave moments of carefully chosen space for the listener to occupy long after the record stops spinning. Spring release.

News & Blues

Sunflower River is now on Twitter. One day I might even tweet.

"Life in the shadow of the wave" is coming very soon and being cut on a lathe from the 1930s as we speak. "It's been lonely in outerspace and I'm glad to be back down" -- a lock groove left playing for nearly a year, now. No more! Expect pictures of the process..

Well, I just heard a rough cut of the Lumbers record, which now has a title: Life in the Shadow of the Wave. Listening was a humbling experience. I feel so fortunate to be releasing a composition that I'd easily place on the same shelf as Gavin Bryars, Philip Glass, Arvo Pärt, and more recently Stars of the Lid and Eluvium. I feel even more fortunate to be working with such a dear friend. We're figuring out the physical details of the release and I'll update as soon as I know more. I'm excitied - this feeling is what running a label is all about.

It's been lonely in outerspace and I'm glad to be back down.

Blind Philip's "Death & Judgment" 78 and 45 are now out of print. The remaining copies of the 45 will wind up in a forthcoming Time-Lag Records list update, though. A digital archive of the release, including photographs, will see its way here soon -- audio is available if you click on the release name to the left.

Here & There

Sunflower River Publications & Recordings is a record label and book publisher founded some time during 2010 in Berkeley, California. The Sunflower River name is being stamped on small-run publications and limited-edition lathe-cut records, with self-sustained funding as a goal and the intention to pay working musicans and working artists for their art.
